Blocking unwanted IM spam?

The spam I keep getting on Yahoo's IM is nauseating, even after I've selected the option to ignore anyone who isn't on my Contact list. (There's only one person; I seldom use IM now for rather obvious reasons, at least Yahoo's) Is there truly a way to block all of the social parasites and their , or should I remove the software and go somewhere else?
