Is he interested or is this a pity date?

So there's this guy that I met last year while working on a school project. This fall however we have some cles together, and so we started talking over facebook more. It' was always flirty, and he'd bring up relationships alot. We're actually really similar in terms of what we want/need in a relationship. He's hinted at the fact that we should hang out, and I've brought it up before and he agreed that we should hang out. When I asked if he was free, he said he was really busy with school (midterms are starting) and that he wouldn't know for sure until the next day. But then he never got back to me about it. At the end of lecture, my friends and I were leaving out the bottom doors and he was standing nearby to ask the prof a question, I didn't even notice him but I guess he was staring at me/checking me out for awhile. I was also really busy with school, that and the fact that I was upset that he blew me off, we ended up not talking for about a month. So we were talking the other night, and it was flirty, and friendly again.We were both ranting about school, and I brought up about how I never get to go out and have fun anymore because I'm so busy all the time. So we were joking about my life being pathetic. At the end of the convo he brought up the fact that we still hadn't hung out and that he thought we should soon once midterms were over. Is he only asking me out because I made my life sound super boring? Or is he interested?
