Is my blood pressure good sys.. # is 133 and my dia.. is 113?
uming that the reading of 133/113 mm Hg is accurate and reproducible then you most likely have hypertension. The standard is to base the diagnosis on a series of 3 readings which is why you are being asked to monitor it. There is considerable data to suggest however that even an isolated diastolic reading above 110 mm Hg is strongly correlated with the eventual diagnosis of hypertension. When monitoring your blood pressure please be aware that it varies quite a bit during the course of any given day. From the lowest to the highest reading may be a difference of as much as 50/25 mm Hg. The highest reading of any particular day will be in the physician's office. Thus when I suspect the diagnosis I ask people to monitor their blood pressure as well. I specify however when the reading is to be taken since there is so much variation during the course of the day. The most reproducible reading meaning the least variation will be a blood pressure reading taken immediately upon awakening. The goal for such a reading is 115/075 mm Hg. There is a linear increase in cardiovascular risk above this. Indeed for every 20/10 increase there is a doubling of cardiovascular risk. Again this applies to a first thing in the morning reading. Your blood pressure unit must be accurate and reproducible as well. I know of only 1 study which tested the available over-the-counter blood pressure units. It recommended the Omron and the ReliOn. Consumers Reports considered the ReliOn a 'Best Buy' as it is less expensive. If I may be of further istance please let me know. I wish you the very best of health and in all things may God bless.
