Friend is now having mixed feelings about Apbt's?

There's good and bad in every breed. I was bitten rather savagely in the pet store I worked in by a toy poodle that the owner insisted was friendly. Have also been bitten by a pomeranian and a maltese-shih-tzu. Always around big dogs, I own 2, and never had a problem.
