She went to the doctor but the doctor didn't tell her what was wrong? That sounds strange. But you did not tell us if it was painful. Boils are painful and almost certainly she would have been given antibiotics. If not painful and no pills, this may be a subcutaneous cyst. They have a tendency to open and drain and then they come back again and repeat the process.
