Why is a cell hypertonic in distilled water?

A cell is hypertonic to distilled water because fluids inside the cell would be more concentrated than the water outside the cell. osmosis will cause the water to go into the cell (down the concentration gradient) and make the concentration even. the cell would continue to fill up with water because the concentration can't even out and it would explode.
